Tools to Help Select Books by Special Subjects

Literature Database (Choose Search from the left hand column)
A searchable database of literature titles covering topics that focus on issues relevant to children and young people. Allows for you to type in a term/word and then choose a to search by title, author or review. The search finds and returns records for books relating to your search term. You can also choose a preselected subject from a drop down menu (such as character, family, feelings, divorce, moving or sports) and it returns books related to the selected subject.
All books in this database have undergone review and are “selected by librarians, teachers, and other trained adults working with children’s literature. Selection of the titles is based on guidelines for choosing quality children’s literature.”

Web site and book resources addressing specific subject areas: Bibliotherapy, Character Education, Family Book Discussion, and Storytelling.
Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC)–School of Education, University of Wisconsin Madison
A subject list compiled from all of CCBC’s bibliogrpahies of from recommended books.
Ex: Global Reading; Graphic Novels; 40 books about Peace and Social Justice; 30 Multicultural Books Every Teen Should Know and more!
Allen County Public Library
“A selection of materials about difficult topics.”
Ex: Dental, Medical and Hospital Visits; Divorce; Families, etc.
