Teacher Book Wizard™ by Scholastic Books
This commercial site offers two type of searches to help when choosing books.
Search by interest level, reading level, language, Topic/Subject, and Genre/Theme.
Important Note: The reading level does not define the developmental level of the content of a book. To assist in choosing books that are on the child’s developmental level, you need to select the interest level. For example choosing the 3.0 to 4.0 reading level without an interest level retrieves a book about a seventeen year old girl. Great for a teenager reading at this level, but not for a younger child.
This takes you to the main page, which features “BookAlike™” (right under the person in the center of the page). This search allows you to type a book title into the search and box and then it returns a a list of titles that are similar at that reading level or higher/lower reading levels.
FIND A BOOK with Lexiles
This commercial siteoffers “Book Find” that uses a Lexile framework for the book reading level. To find out more
This introduction page provides information on reading and explains how to use the “Find a Book” to find books at your child’s reading level.
Note: You do not need to know your child’s Lexile measure to use this tool. After choosing “Find a Book” on the left side of the page, you will be asked about your child’s reading. The first question asks for the reader’s Lexile measure. Choose “My reader does not have a Lexile measure” and then it will then bring up a drop down menu for choosing the grade along with another question about the reader. The next screen allows you to select subjects of interest and provides limiters (Award Winners, Fiction, Nonficiton and more).
This sysem is based on Lexile measure and you can read more about it at: What are Lexiles?
Reading is Fundatmental (RIF)
RIF s a nonprofit children and family literacy organization.
This tool allows for searches in RIF’s database for books by age level (0-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12, and 13+). When the list is returned, click on the title to read more about the book and enlarge the cover photo.
